= NetBIOS = NetBIOS is a generic service for communication over a local area network. It was developed by IBM for communication over 802.x (802.2, 802.3, etc) local networks. IBM DOS could use it to share disks and printers over network using the SMB protocol. Novell's implementation for MS-DOS (netbios.exe) was popular. Windows (e.g. Windows for Workgroups, Windows 95) adopted SMB over NetBIOS as their default network sharing protocol. WfW/Win95,... also supported SMB over IPX/SPX (and later over TCP/IP). Windows also supports NetBIOS over TCP/IP (a.k.a. NBT) * [http://bitsavers.informatik.uni-stuttgart.de/pdf/ibm/lan/SC30-3383-2_Local_Area_Network_Technical_Reference_Nov88.pdf IBM Local Area Network Technical Reference] (definition of NetBIOS interface and NetBIOS Frames Protocol) * [https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc1002 RFC 1002] PROTOCOL STANDARD FOR A NetBIOS SERVICE ON A TCP/UDP TRANSPORT (a.k.a NBT)
